Since the 1980s, the concept of human enhancement—biomedical interventions aimed at improving human capabilities beyond mere health maintenance—has become a central topic in moral philosophy and ethics. With advancements in technology, the possibility of enhancing physical, cognitive, and emotional traits has raised fundamental questions about the essence of human nature and the ethical implications of such modifications. On one hand, enhancements can offer the potential for overcoming limitations and improving quality of life. On the other hand, eliminating human frailty may come at the cost of losing essential aspects of the human experience.
Acknowledging and accepting human weakness has traditionally been seen as a way to cultivate virtues like humility, empathy, and generosity. These qualities are often regarded as essential to moral development and interpersonal relationships. Without these limitations, it could be argued that the sense of vulnerability that fosters compassion and cooperation might be diminished, potentially altering our moral fabric. This raises the question: would a society of enhanced individuals still value and practice virtues that are born from human limitations?
This presentation seeks to explore the ethical dimensions of enhancement by considering the potential value of human weakness. It examines how frailty might shape character, contribute to personal growth, and influence our moral responsibilities toward one another.
