Leadership is the ability to motivate, inspire, and lead others to a common goal. This workshop is geared toward music education and will focus on strategies to teach your students how to become leaders. In the field of music, leadership does not only mean being the best player or gaining the most recognition. Instead, it is something that is cultivated within each person so they can enter the professional arena with conviction and purpose. Leadership is a skill gained through concrete learning methods and should be taught alongside other curriculum objectives. Teachers must inspire students and give them tools, such as a positive growth-oriented mindset and confidence-building affirmations, so they have the ability to stand firmly in their convictions and become leaders who inspire those around them to move in a similar direction and achieve a shared goal. To reach the learning outcome of how to teach students to become leaders, this workshop will explore additional strategies such as social emotional learning, active listening, and peer-led learning forums. There will also be a focus on how to incorporate leadership tools in the context of collaboration, conceptual learning, peer influence, and decision-making. When paired with hard work and dedication, these strategies can produce the next generation of leaders who have a clear purpose that embodies their belief in their art and individuality. In order to be a leader, a musician must inspire the audience with their skill, determination, conviction, and interpretation, which in turn allows art to transcend all boundaries.
