Understanding how schools foster civic self-efficacy is critical in the context of contemporary democratic challenges, including misinformation, polarization, and declining civic participation. By identifying which school experiences are most strongly associated with civic capacity across diverse national settings, this study contributes to ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic engagement through education. This project examines how school-based civic learning experiences contribute to students’ civic self-efficacy across national contexts. Using data from the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study, which includes 8th-grade students from 22 countries, the study examines the question, if three key dimensions of civic education, civic curriculum, participation in school-based civic activities, and openness of classroom climate, are effective in fostering students’ civic self-efficacy and if there are significant national-level contextual effects in these associations. Employing multilevel modeling, the analysis explores both individual- and country-level variation in how these experiences shape students’ perceived capacity to engage in civic and political life.
